Why Hydrogen?
Hydrogen does not exist alone in nature. Natural gas contains hydrogen, as do hydrocarbons, like coal. A diverse array of primary energy sources, such as wind, solar, geothermal, nuclear and hydropower, can also be used to extract hydrogen from water. It’s this diversity of options that enables hydrogen production almost anywhere in the world.Hydrogen-Electricity Economy Value Chain
A new hydrogen economy requires cost-effective hydrogen production and expanded hydrogen infrastructure to ensure that end-users have convenient access to hydrogen energy. Like many technologies, research, development and demonstration must continue to lower cost, increase efficiency and address emission issues associated with some hydrogen production technologies. At this point the U.S. transition will likely build on the existing infrastructure and begin with a fossil fuel-dominant mix in the near-term, followed by an increasing presence of renewables, nuclear and coal energy. Hydrogen used as a fuel can provide benefits to energy security, the environment and economic growth. (source: National Hydrogen Association)
